1234。(Click here to listen to Feist - 1234) 今年一定是Yael Naim了。
If I say Yael Naim, you probably would ask, who is that? But if what we are talking about is the most recent, very hot Macbook Air from apple, you probably would be thinking about the impressive commercial of pulling out the super thin laptop computer out of the ‘inter-department’ envelope, and, of course, the song that plays along. Apple has always been extremely amazing in terms of living up to a certain image, and then sell it to its unfortunate followers who have supported the company through its hardest time when Microsoft was still the king of the hill. (They kinda still are.) But one thing is for sure, Apple/Macs are usually pretty, and damn their commercial music sounds good.
Last year we had Feist, and her 1234. (I believe that song got so famous that even MadTV did a parody of its music video). This year, the song that is used in the MacBook Air commercial came from an Israeli/French singer Yael Naim, named New Soul. Born in Paris and raised in Israel, Yael Naim masters three languages, and sings in all of them. This first album (also called Yael Naim) is a great example of her multilingual talent and her multicultural background. I got the album from iTunes as soon as I figured out the name of the song (which took a hell of a while when the commercial first came out and when there were not much info on the internet yet). I loved it.
One song that gets my highest scores is in fact the first one called Paris. Sung in Hebrew (which I do not understand at all except the word Paris), it sounds amazingly French! I was trying to describe the Frenchness in this song with words but only can’t. It is a kind of attitude, a certain appreciation of senses and details of life, which marked many things about France that we adore. French fashion, architecture - sense of vision; perfumes - sense of smell; cuisine and wine, sense of taste. I guess this is just something that a lot of Americans do not understand, and probably still would appreciate if they actually took an afternoon off and sat down with a coffee, and let time pass.
